“Ganavya’s voice is a thick ephemera, like smoke as dark as ink, just coming off the fire.” — The New York Times
Born in New York and raised in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state in India, GANAVYA has recently released an ambitious album called Daughter of a Temple. Featuring such luminaries as Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings and Immanuel Wilkins, this record incorporates the Hindu tradition of harikatha to create a deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music. Followers of John Coltrane will recognize the reimagined suite from A Love Supreme, while Alice Coltrane’s 1971 “Journey in Satchidananda” is given a haunting, hypnotic new treatment. The Wall Street Journal describes GANAVYA as “among modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” while The Guardian wrote that her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks.” Having just seen her perform in January at the NYC Winter Jazzfest, we can attest to those reviews and promise you an unforgettable experience!
